2019 Fieldtrip Information

This year the Grade 11 Geography students will participate in a 2-day field trip to Urgench and Karakalpakstan, which will take place on 23^rd – 24^th April 2019. The trip is an essential and enjoyable part of both the SL & HL IB Geography course, specifically the Freshwater unit of study. The students will undertake practical fieldwork during their visit which will eventually contribute to their final IB grade in the subject. Of equal importance, the students will have a firsthand opportunity to experience human use and management of the Karakalpakstan region.

Karakalpakstan is an important agricultural region which has a system of canals distributing water from the Amu Darya river to help irrigate the land which provides food and other agricultural products for both Uzbekistan and the international market. There is currently a World Bank project to improve the efficiency and sustainability of this irrigation system.

Students will follow a program of fieldwork that allows them to experience different aspects of the Karakalpakstan region. They will visit study locations on the canal system, a sustainable farming project and an irrigation management centre to undertake their studies. Students will have time to plan, gather data and evaluate their work during the trip. The data collected will be integral to completing the Internal Assessment, which is a compulsory element of the IB Geography course and worth up to 25% of the final grade.
