International Stakeholders in Food & Health

Objective: explore the role of various stakeholders in food and health issues, especially famine.

Outcomes:

Starter: can you identify these logos?

1. You need to investigate the one of the following international stakeholders in food and health:

• World Food Programme,
• Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations,
• and World Health Organization), governments
• NGOs

You need to be clear on their role in combating food insecurity and disease;

• where do they operate?
• what do they focus on?
• how are they funded?
• how effective are they?
• how do they connect to the SDGs?

If you can work in groups of three to look at this and share (through discussion), this would be a good approach though you can do this on your own.  

2. Despite the huge range of international stakeholders, issues still occur and famine is arguably the most serious. You need to build a case study of the issues affecting a famine-stricken country or area. Make sure you include the factors affecting the severity of famine, including:

• governance,
• the power of the media and;
• access to international aid
• other factors (which can vary between examples)

3. Briefly evaluate the factors affecting the severity of famine with reference to your specific example.
